If you're familiar with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you can easily relate the rituals to someone that washes their hands frequently or flips light switches on and off so many times. These aren't the only OCD rituals people suffer from. There are numerous other repetitive behaviors that you may not be familiar with. Here, I'll provide you with a few of my personal rituals and explain how I was finally diagnosed with OCD.

Do you have the habit of always go to the same gas station? If so, why? Is going to the same gas station all the time convenient for you, or do you frequent the same gas station out of fear? I do it out of fear, I fear that fuel from other gas stations may harm my already frail car. I logically know that most fuel is the same, no matter what gas station it's from. I will only stop at an unfamiliar station if I'm running on empty, even below the line, and know I can't make it to my own gas station.

Do you always eat the same entree at restaurants you frequently go to? Of course you don't, but if you do, why do you do it? Because nothing else on the menu looks good? I do it, again, out of fear. I fear that if I pick something else on the menu, even though I may have read its description and it sounds really good, I fear that I will not like the meal. Logically, yes I would like it, I like almost any food you put in front of me. But I don't want to take the chance of wasting food and money on something I don't like.

Yes, I know these rituals sound pretty odd, but really, they aren't my only OCD symptoms. As you explore Obsessive Compulsive Life more in depth, you'll find many other obsessions and compulsions that you may relate to, if you suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. There is actually a diagnostic criteria for OCD that is used by psychiatrists to diagnose patients.

My OCD diagnoses came after 13 years of obsessions and compulsions that I did not understand. The biggest part of getting a diagnosis for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is being totally honest with your psychiatrist. That is one thing I definitely failed at during my 13 years of OCD suffering. I finally decided to make a list of my repetitive behaviors to present to my psychiatrist. There are 20 to 30 current behaviors on that list. I've had many past behaviors throughout my life also that I have discovered along the way.

I'm not here to diagnose you with OCD, I'm here to tell you my story. If you feel you are suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, please seek help through a psychiatrist.
