What addictions have you suffered from throughout life? I've had a long list over the past several years. When you rely on any substance, it's more complicated for an obsessive compulsive person to quit due to our way of thinking. Here you'll find information about several types of addictions and discover what I abused and how I coped with each. Find suggestions on how to calm the fixations you have and live free from unhealthy substances. |
My Past and Present
Alcohol Abuse
One of the most damaging substances I have probably overcome in my life is alcohol. I had been an alcoholic for almost 8 years. I'll admit, I did not drink everyday, but I was one of those weekend drinkers. I would drink on Fridays and Saturdays only, to begin with. It was not social drinking either. When I drank, I drank to get drunk and did not stop until I was either passed out or sick. See what happened with my alcohol abuse.
Nicotine Dependence
Another damaging habit I began when I was 16 is smoking. I thought I would quit by the time I was 20, but I did not, and I continue to still smoke at 30 with no plans to quit anytime soon. Read more about my nicotine habit.
Caffeine
I have to admit, I LOVE caffeine, but I know it can be bad for you in excess. I get caffeine from energy drinks, coffee, and occasionally Pepsi. I've even resorted to caffeine pills when I was a lot younger. Find out what other forms of caffeine I use.
Internet Abuse
Although not a harmful substance, an internet addiction can cripple you. Find out how many hours a day I have spent online previously; chatting, downloading, working, emailing, cruising for sex, and more.
Sexual Compulsion
Also not a substance, a sexual compulsion can lead to multiple diseases and time lost searching for sex. Have you ever felt you were addicted to sex? I have been through several periods of this addiction in the last 10 years. Learn more about what comes from sexual compulsion.
Gambling
Who could forget gambling? I almost forgot to mention that I LOVE TO GAMBLE! Whether it's in Las Vegas or here at home on one of the numerous boats, I go quite often. Just this month I believe I have been about 5 or 6 times. Luckily though, I have made money this month, but it only brings my current years gambling loss to about $1600 instead of $2000! That's right, I keep track! Read more about my gambling addiction.
There are many other bad habits a person can have. Unfortunately, I am not going to focus on those since they are not currently a part of my life. Most of the other habits involve illegal substances. I have to admit, I have touched marijuana in my past, but I'm too scared to try other illegal substances for fear that I would overdose and it would kill me, if that makes sense.
